'It was a dark and stormy night - A radar operator woke the ship's captain to report a blip on the radar directly in their path, 20 miles ahead; a ship that refused to move.'Tell it to move!' said the irritated captain. 'We did. It refuses to', said the operator.
The captain, furious, rose and sent a message himself: 'Shift your course 20 degrees starboard.' A message came back: 'YOU shift your course 20 degrees starboard.'
'What presumption! Don't they know who I am! Let them know who I am,'said the captain. The signal goes out: 'This is Captain Horatio Hornblower the 26th, commanding you to move 20 degrees to starboard at once.' The signal returns: 'This is Seaman Carl Jones the 3rd commanding YOU to move 20 degrees to starboard at once.'
The captain is incandescent with rage. 'Let him know who we are!' he commands. The signal goes out: 'This is the mighty Missouri, flagship of the Seventh Fleet. You are directly in our path. Move at once or face the consequences!' The signal returns: 'This is the lighthouse... Your call!'
